Ryukoku University suspends baseball club over violence and theft
Ryukoku University has suspended its baseball club for one month, from July 28 to August 27, following investigations into multiple instances of misconduct. The university cited several serious issues, including repeated acts of violence among members, theft within the dormitory, and the sharing of inappropriate videos.
According to university reports, violence occurred even after preventative measures were implemented in 2025. Theft involving money and personal items affected approximately 20 students; notably, these incidents were known among members but were not reported to the coaching staff. Additionally, students were found to have filmed inappropriate videos of themselves urinating in a river in Shiga Prefecture and subsequently shared them on a dormitory television.
The university has announced plans to abolish the dormitory system as part of its response. Despite the suspension, the club has been permitted to participate in the autumn league, which is scheduled to begin on September 5.
