Ryukyu Islands natural heritage features unique endemic species

The Ryukyu Islands, specifically Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, northern Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island, represent a significant natural heritage site characterized by high biodiversity. Due to their geological history of isolation from the mainland, these islands have fostered the evolution of numerous endemic species. Notable examples include the Iriomote cat on Iriomote Island, the Amami rabbit on Amami Oshima and Tokunoshima, and the Okinawa rail on northern Okinawa Island.

Iriomote Island is particularly noted for its extensive mangrove forests, which serve as vital habitats for diverse aquatic life. The region's warm, humid climate, influenced by the Kuroshio Current, supports a complex ecosystem where many species have survived or evolved uniquely following the separation of the islands from the Asian continent.
