Ryusuke Hamaguchi releases trailer for new film All of a Sudden

Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi, winner of the 2022 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film for Drive My Car, has released the Brazilian trailer for his new film, All of a Sudden (O Sentido da Vida).

This production marks Hamaguchi’s first French-language film. A co-production between France, Japan, Germany, and Belgium, the story is inspired by the non-fiction book When Life Suddenly Takes a Turn by Makiko Miyano and Maho Isono. The plot follows Marie-Lou (Virginie Efira), a director of an elderly care facility attempting to implement a philosophy of dignity and active listening, and Mari (Tao Okamoto), a theater director battling cancer. The two women form a deep bond as they work together to overcome institutional resistance.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto shared the Best Actress award. It has been selected as Japan’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars. In Brazil, the film will be part of the 50th São Paulo International Film Festival before its wide theatrical release in the first half of 2027, distributed by Vitrine Filmes and Sato Company.
