Rāzna National Park discovery of rare beetle species

Researchers developing a new nature conservation plan for Rāzna National Park have identified several rare and protected beetle species in Latvia.

One significant discovery is the Dejane's darkling beetle (Platydema dejeanii) found near Lake Ežezers in the Piļoru oak grove. This sighting represents the furthest known observation of the species in northeastern Europe. The beetle, measuring approximately 5–6 mm, is associated with wood-decaying fungi and fallen deciduous trees.

Additionally, the Mannerheim short-winged beetle (Oxyporus mannerheimii), a species protected at the European level, was discovered near Andrupenes. This marks the first time the species has been recorded within the territory of Rāzna National Park. This beetle inhabits old or natural boreal forests and is linked to polypore fungi.

Expert Dmitrijs Teļnovs stated that the discovery of these species serves as a high assessment of the park, indicating that the forest habitats and living conditions in the area are in excellent condition for preserving threatened invertebrate species.
