Rózsafa, Hungary faces tap water contamination with worms, mayor urges caution

In the small Baranya‑county village of Rózsafa, residents discovered filamentous worms and ciliated amoebae in their tap water. Mayor Norbert Németh alerted the public, urging households to avoid drinking the water while investigations continued.

Baranya‑Víz Zrt., the regional water supplier, initially stated that the drinking water was safe but confirmed laboratory tests that identified the organisms. Samples were taken from multiple households, and the provider began emergency cleaning of the reservoir, delivering clean water by truck to the village. Several restaurants, shops and a local pickling plant temporarily shut down. Medical experts said the parasites posed no direct health threat, and the water was later declared suitable for consumption, though the source of the contamination remains under investigation.
