India and Ghana deepen strategic partnership in agriculture and defense

India and Ghana are expanding their comprehensive partnership through new agreements in agriculture, science, and strategic sectors. During a diplomatic visit to Accra, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Ghanaian officials, including President John Dramani Mahama and Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to deepen bilateral ties.

A key outcome was a five-year Memorandum of Understanding between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Ghana's CSIR-Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI). This partnership will initially focus on tomato research and development, as well as tuber crops like cassava and yam, aiming to improve productivity and post-harvest technologies. Additionally, the Zoological Survey of India and the University of Ghana signed an agreement for scientific cooperation.

The two nations are also exploring cooperation in pharmaceuticals, digital technology, and defense, with negotiations underway for a Defence Cooperation Agreement. Ghana is seeking Indian expertise to modernize its railway infrastructure, building on the success of the Indian-financed Tema-Mpakadan line. Ghana also expressed interest in India's digital economy experience to support its One Million Coders programme.

On the multilateral stage, both countries discussed working together for United Nations reforms and strengthening engagement with the African Union and ECOWAS. Ghana also announced its intention to formally apply for membership in BRICS.
