S. Jaishankar calls for Global South solidarity and economic cooperation

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for strengthened solidarity among Global South nations to address various global crises. Presiding over a high-level meeting of like-minded countries and allies convened by India, Jaishankar emphasized that while the Global South is often at the forefront of global challenges, it remains behind in decision-making processes.

He urged Global South nations to become integral parts of the frameworks that deliberate on issues directly affecting their futures. Key areas for action include enhancing economic cooperation to mitigate the impact of global crises, ensuring food security—specifically regarding grain and fertilizer supplies—and advocating for fair economic and trade practices that bolster local production capabilities rather than just consumption.

Additionally, Jaishankar highlighted the need to reduce dependence on the Global North for technology and international cooperation frameworks. He suggested that artificial intelligence should remain human-centric and that developed tools and frameworks should be shared for the benefit of Global South members. He also stressed the importance of securing maritime routes and protecting commercial shipping and seafarers under international law.
