India's Jaishankar visits Ukraine to discuss peace and Black Sea security
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is conducting a three-day official visit to Ukraine and Poland from September 3 to 5. During his time in Kyiv, Jaishankar met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha to discuss ways to enhance bilateral ties and approaches to ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Jaishankar emphasized that the conflict, now in its fifth year, must be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy, and negotiation rather than through economic pressures related to the purchase of Russian oil, minerals, or fertilizers. He noted that while India respects Ukraine's perspective on energy imports, New Delhi must also prioritize the energy security of its 1.4 billion people.
Discussions also focused on Black Sea security, specifically the restoration of freedom of navigation and the protection of commercial shipping and food corridors. Ukrainian officials expressed gratitude for India's commitment to peace, noting that the visit marks a historic moment in bilateral relations. The two nations also agreed to hold a future intergovernmental committee meeting to further cooperation in sectors such as health, agriculture, and digital technology.
