S. Jaishankar warns of impending global food and energy crisis

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has warned of an impending major global food crisis. Speaking at an Asia Society event in New York, Jaishankar identified a convergence of pressures affecting food, energy, fertilizer, and finance.

Key drivers of this potential crisis include the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Iran-Gulf region. These geopolitical tensions threaten to disrupt grain shipments through the Black Sea and impact fertilizer production in Russia and West Asia. Additionally, the potential emergence of a ‘Super El Niño’ climate event could further destabilize global agricultural output.

Jaishankar noted that the Global South—encompassing developing economies in Asia, Africa, and Latin America—is most vulnerable to these combined shocks. The energy market is also facing significant pressure, creating a ‘dual crisis’ where geopolitical decisions directly influence fuel and food affordability.
