Saab unveils A3-001 uncrewed combat aircraft concept

Saab has unveiled a full-scale mock-up of its A3-001, a concept for a supersonic uncrewed combat aircraft, during the Swedish Armed Forces Jubilee Air Show at Malmen Air Base in Linköping. The platform is designed as a “Loyal Wingman” to operate in synergy with crewed aircraft, such as the Saab Gripen, within an integrated system-of-systems approach.

The A3-001 concept features a blended wing-body design without a traditional tail to enhance stealth. It is intended for high-risk missions in contested environments, including electronic warfare, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), and precision strikes. Technical specifications suggest the use of a General Electric F414 turbofan engine to achieve supersonic speeds, alongside an internal weapons bay to maintain low observability.

Peter Nilsson, head of Saab’s Advanced Programs business unit, stated that the company is currently in an intensive development phase to lay the foundation for next-generation combat air systems. Saab intends to fly uncrewed demonstrators with fighter-like characteristics before 2030, with the A3-001 representing a potential operational evolution for the mid-2030s.
