Saab unveils first GlobalEye surveillance aircraft for Sweden

Saab has unveiled the first GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft ordered by Sweden. The aircraft, designated S 106 by the Swedish Armed Forces, is designed to enhance military surveillance across air, land, and maritime domains.

Built on the Bombardier Global 6000 business jet platform, the system utilizes the Erieye Extended Range radar, which is capable of detecting targets at distances of up to 650 kilometers. The aircraft will provide military commanders with a comprehensive operational picture by detecting, identifying, and tracking objects simultaneously across multiple environments. This information can be shared with fighter jets, warships, and ground units to facilitate rapid decision-making.

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has ordered a total of three GlobalEye aircraft. The first unit is expected to be delivered next year, following a testing and verification phase. This investment is part of Sweden’s broader effort to strengthen national defense and situational awareness. Additionally, the technology has broader implications for NATO, as eleven member countries have previously discussed a joint project to acquire up to ten GlobalEye aircraft to modernize the alliance’s surveillance capabilities.
