Saad Lamjarred sentenced to 10 years in prison by French appeals court

A French appeals court in Créteil has increased the prison sentence for Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred to ten years for aggravated rape. This ruling, announced on Saturday, significantly raises the original six-year sentence handed down by a Paris court in 2023 for the same case.

The conviction stems from a 2016 incident in which a 20-year-old woman, identified as Laura P., accused the singer of raping her in a Paris hotel room after they met at a nightclub. The court found Lamjarred guilty of aggravated rape, noting he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offense. The prosecution had previously requested an eight-year sentence.

Following the verdict, the court issued a warrant for Lamjarred's immediate imprisonment, and he was taken into custody. Lamjarred, 41, has consistently maintained his innocence and denied all allegations. His defense team, led by attorney Marie Burguburu, has announced intentions to appeal the decision to the French Court of Cassation.

This case is part of a broader series of legal challenges for the artist. In a separate matter, Lamjarred was sentenced in May to five years in prison for a 2018 rape allegation near Saint-Tropez, a verdict he has also appealed. Additionally, five individuals were convicted in April for an attempted extortion of three million euros targeting the singer.
