Saad Lamjarred sentenced to 10 years in prison by French appeals court

A French appeals court in Créteil has sentenced Moroccan singer Saad Lamjarred to 10 years in prison. The ruling pertains to a 2016 case in which he was convicted of raping a woman in a Paris hotel room after meeting her at a nightclub.

The new sentence is four years longer than the six-year prison term originally handed down by a Paris court in 2023. French prosecutors noted that the rape was aggravated by Lamjarred's alcohol consumption. While prosecutors had sought an eight-year sentence, the appeals court issued a higher term.

Lamjarred has maintained his innocence and intends to challenge the decision before France’s Court of Cassation, according to his lawyer, Marie Burguburu. The appeal proceedings in Créteil were conducted behind closed doors.
