Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes nominated for Natural Wonder of the Year 2026

The Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes in Thuringia, Germany, have been nominated for the first time for the 'Natural Wonder of the Year 2026' award. The site is one of nine finalists selected by a jury from the Heinz Sielmann Foundation and the German Hiking Association for a nationwide public vote.

Recognized by Guinness World Records as the 'most colorful show caves in the world,' the site features diverse mineral formations in shades of yellow, ochre, red, brown, and green. The caves were originally formed through alum shale mining, after which natural processes transformed the hollows over decades into unique geological structures.
