Saalfeld to install 15 new Stolpersteine memorial stones

On September 30, 2026, the town of Saalfeld will lay 15 new Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) to commemorate individuals persecuted, deported, murdered, or forced to flee during the National Socialist era.

Katharina König-Preuss, an anti-fascism spokesperson for the Die Linke parliamentary group in Thuringia, welcomed the continuation of this memorial work. She noted that the stones bring history back to the specific locations where these individuals lived, worked, and were part of the community, ensuring they are remembered as people with names and families rather than abstract statistics.

The ceremony will honor several individuals, including Dr. Eugen Gütermann, Oskar Grossmann, Gustav Steinberg, and members of the Sachs family. The commemorations will include a prayer for peace and will take place at various locations throughout the town, including Hohen Ufer, Fleischgasse, Obere Straße, Zetkinstraße, and Köditzgasse.
