Saanich Council rejects 349-unit rental project near UVic

Saanich council rejected a proposal for a 349-unit rental development near the University of Victoria in a 6-2 vote on August 17. The project, proposed by Invictus Commercial Investment Corp., would have consisted of two six-storey complexes located at 2315-2335 Edgelow St. and 3876A Finnerty Rd.

Despite recommendations from district staff that the project align with provincial Transit-Oriented Area (TOA) regulations, the council faced significant public opposition regarding density in the Gordon Head area. A key technical issue involved the consolidation of seven single-family lots; Councillor Colin Plant noted that because the developer had not completed the lot consolidation, the council could not proceed with the application.

The rejected plan included market-rental units ranging from studios to three-bedroom apartments, along with 177 underground parking spaces and 364 bicycle spaces.
