Saanich head-on collision leaves woman critically injured

A head-on collision on West Saanich Road on Tuesday night has left Miranda Gwen Shaffer in critical condition with life-altering injuries. Shaffer was driving with her husband, Josh, when their vehicle collided with a truck in the 5300 block of West Saanich Road around 9:15 p.m.

Shaffer has undergone multiple surgeries for injuries including a brain bleed, two broken neck bones, and severe nerve damage in her diaphragm. Her brother, Marty Milner, stated that she may require a tube to breathe and faces the possibility of lifelong disability. Josh Shaffer sustained minor physical injuries, including a chest injury.

Saanich Police arrested the driver of the truck after they refused to provide a breath sample at the scene. While the truck driver appeared uninjured, investigators from the Major Crime Unit are conducting an investigation and expect to recommend criminal charges to Crown counsel.
