Saar River blue‑green algae pose lethal risk to dogs in Germany

The Saarland Environment Ministry has confirmed the presence of toxic blue‑green algae (cyanobacteria) along the Saar River, with concentrations in some spots reaching the warning level for bathing waters. While the river is not a designated swimming area for people, dogs that enter the water can be exposed to the toxin, which can cause death within minutes.

Veterinary experts advise owners to watch for symptoms such as rapid onset of weakness, vomiting, or respiratory distress within 30 minutes of water contact. Visible algal scums, discolored water, or dead wildlife on the banks are warning signs. The ministry recommends keeping dogs away from the river until concentrations fall below hazardous levels and seeking immediate veterinary care if poisoning is suspected.
