Saarbahn and GDL remain in deadlock over labor dispute

A prolonged labor dispute between the Saarbahn transit company and the German Locomotive Drivers' Association (GDL) has reached a deadlock. The conflict has resulted in approximately 27 strike actions, totaling nearly 700 hours of lost work over 50 days.

The core of the disagreement is a fundamental question of representation. The GDL is demanding a specific collective agreement for TramTrain drivers, who operate vehicles that combine streetcar and regional train functions. Conversely, Saarbahn and the Kommunaler Arbeitgeberverband Saar (KAV) seek to end the partnership with the GDL, proposing instead that the TV-N Saar municipal collective agreement serve as the unified framework for the company.

Saarbahn management is attempting to mitigate the impact of these strikes by expanding replacement services, including buses between Lebach and Saargemünd. Saarbahn CEO Karsten Nagel criticized the GDL for short-notice strike calls and cancellations, stating such tactics primarily penalize passengers.
