Saarbahn faces new GDL strikes and driver retraining

The German train drivers' union, GDL, has initiated a new round of strikes against Saarbahn, a transport provider serving Saarbrücken and extending into France. The strikes, which have been occurring in waves, have caused significant disruptions to tram-train services, including the S1 line.

In response to the ongoing labor dispute and the need for greater operational flexibility, Saarbahn has begun retraining eight bus drivers to operate trams. This six-week training program is intended to provide relief within the Saarbrücken city center area. However, the GDL has expressed skepticism, stating that such measures are insufficient to ensure stable transport services during the conflict.

Replacement bus services are being deployed to mitigate the impact on passengers and are expected to continue through the weekend. Saarbahn reports that the company carries nearly 35 million passengers annually across its regional and cross-border network.
