Germany infrastructure projects cause rail and road closures

Major infrastructure projects in Germany are causing significant disruptions to rail and road travel.

On the critical north-south rail line between Düsseldorf and Cologne, Deutsche Bahn will implement a full closure from August 21 to September 4. The project involves extensive work on tracks, switches, and bridges, including the replacement of over 8,600 sleepers and 6,500 tons of ballast. While long-distance and regional trains will be diverted or replaced by buses, S-Bahn services on this route will remain suspended until December 4.

In Saxony, the Leipzig–Zwickau rail line will face closures at the Gößnitz junction until mid-December. This work is part of the expansion of the Saxony-Franconia Magistrale, intended to allow higher speeds and increased freight capacity. Travelers between Gößnitz and Zwickau must use replacement buses.

Road traffic is also affected by maintenance on the A52 bridge over the Ruhr between Essen and Düsseldorf. The bridge will undergo directional closures on two weekends for cleaning work on its transition structures. This follows previous repairs to a gap discovered in the structure earlier this year.
