Saarbahn faces wave of strikes in September amid labor dispute

The labor dispute between the German Locomotive Drivers' Union (GDL) and the transport company Saarbahn is escalating, with a series of wave strikes announced for September. The GDL intends to use unpredictable, short-term work stoppages to increase pressure on the employer, rather than a single continuous strike.

The core of the conflict involves the GDL's demand for an 8 percent wage increase and the establishment of an independent collective agreement. Saarbahn management has rejected these demands, and no resolution is currently in sight. Since May 26, approximately 80 tram-train drivers have participated in 19 different strike actions.

To maintain service during these disruptions, Saarbahn has been forced to implement permanent rail replacement services using buses and subcontractors. Saarbahn CEO Karsten Nagel confirmed that these measures are incurring additional costs, though specific figures have not been disclosed during the ongoing conflict.
