Saarbahn strike uncertainty continues after Monday walkout is canceled

The German train drivers' union, GDL, has canceled a previously announced warning strike at Saarbahn for Monday, August 10, which was scheduled to coincide with the start of the school year in Saarland. However, the situation remains uncertain as the union has indicated that strikes could still take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Saarbahn management expressed confusion regarding the fluctuating strike notices. While regular tram services resumed on Monday, the company is maintaining replacement bus services due to the ongoing uncertainty. A new contingency plan involving both buses and limited tram-train services is being prepared in case the strikes proceed as threatened.

The labor dispute stems from stalled negotiations between the GDL, Saarbahn management, and the Kommunaler Arbeitgeberverband Saar (KAV) regarding a new collective agreement. Employers have sought to adopt a contract previously agreed upon by the Verdi union, a move the GDL has categorically rejected.
