German transport workers launch warning strikes over wage disputes

Public transportation services in parts of Germany are facing disruptions due to ongoing labor disputes and warning strikes.

In Saarbrücken, the GDL union has engaged in a series of unpredictable warning strikes involving approximately 80 train drivers at Saarbahn. While some strikes were canceled on short notice, causing logistical challenges for the transit operator, the threat of further work stoppages remains. Saarbahn has implemented emergency schedules and replacement bus services to mitigate the impact on commuters.

Separately, the union ver.di has called for a two-day warning strike at PNVG Merseburg-Querfurt, scheduled for August 17 and 18, 2026. The dispute centers on wage negotiations for approximately 140 employees, with the union seeking a monthly increase of 270 euros to offset rising living costs and achieve better pay parity with other regional transport companies.
