Saarbrücken recycling center fire highlights lithium battery risks

A fire broke out at the ZKE recycling center in Saarbrücken early Tuesday morning, triggered by a waste press filled with bulky refuse. Firefighters responded to the alarm, which was raised shortly before 5:00 AM. Upon opening the affected container, crews encountered high flames. Approximately 20 firefighters managed to control the blaze within minutes.

The incident highlights the recurring danger posed by lithium-ion batteries being improperly disposed of in household waste. While it has not been definitively proven that a battery caused this specific fire, officials noted that the high pressure used in waste compactors can cause lithium-ion cells to ignite. The waste involved included mattresses, textiles, and furniture components.
