Saarland approves new hospital plan for 2027
The Saarland state cabinet has approved a new hospital plan scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. Health Minister Magnus Jung announced that the plan focuses on increasing specialization and quality through the introduction of service groups, ensuring that complex treatments are performed by facilities that handle them frequently and proficiently.
While the plan aims to concentrate certain medical services to improve efficiency and crisis resilience, Minister Jung stated that no hospital locations will be closed. He noted that significant site consolidations occurred over the previous decade. To support these improvements, one billion euros will be invested in Saarland hospitals over the next ten years, with less than 200 million euros coming from federal funds. Additionally, one billion euros has already been allocated for the construction of the new central clinic at the University Hospital Saar (UKS).
Some critics argue the plan lacks sufficient movement to meet broader reform goals, such as reducing redundant services in neighboring clinics. While most service offerings remain intact, certain specializations, such as hip and knee prosthetics, will see a reduction in the number of participating sites to promote specialization.
