Saarland economy shows no turnaround as business confidence remains low
The Industrie‑ und Handelskammer (IHK) Saarland released its July 2026 survey of roughly 300 firms employing about 90,000 people. The IHK business‑climate index rose by 0.4 points to 6.8, a modest gain driven mainly by the services sector. The industrial segment, notably automotive‑parts suppliers, recorded a weaker assessment. The IHK expectations index improved by 2.8 points to –11.1 but stayed in negative territory.
Only 25 % of respondents rated their situation as good or very good, 57 % as satisfactory and 18 % as poor. IHK chief Dr. Frank Thomé warned that “no economic turnaround can be spoken of yet in July… Germany remains an over‑regulated high‑cost location.” He added that the federal reform package, while containing some relief measures, does not go far enough. Persistent high location costs and renewed tensions in the Persian Gulf keep energy and raw‑material prices under pressure, adding further uncertainty for Saarland businesses.
Thomé called for continued reform and greater entrepreneurial freedom to restore investment, innovation and growth in the region.
