Saarland expands teaching staff to combat educator shortage

The Saarland Ministry of Education and Culture has addressed a special report from the state Court of Auditors regarding the recruitment and retention of teaching staff. During the current legislative period, Saarland has added 662 teacher positions, including 171 roles dedicated to language support.

Education Minister Christine Streichert-Clivot stated that the ministry will continue to expand lateral entry into the profession and focus on high-quality training to remain competitive in the national labor market. The ministry is also emphasizing multiprofessional structures, such as school social work, to relieve the workload of educators.

While progress has been made, discussions continue regarding the challenges of teaching in increasingly heterogeneous classrooms. Experts and the Court of Auditors suggest that increased investment in education is necessary to prevent higher social costs in the future and to address the professional burnout caused by high workloads.
