Saarland highway construction causes major traffic disruptions

Major highway construction projects are causing significant traffic disruptions for commuters in the Saarland region of Germany.

On the A620, Autobahn GmbH has begun soil investigations between the Wadgassen and Völklingen-Wehrden junctions. These works, scheduled to last until October 12, 2026, involve periodic lane closures on both directions. In the direction of Saarbrücken, restrictions occur between 08:30 and 16:00, while those heading toward Saarlouis face closures between 07:30 and 13:30. Additionally, a full closure of the Völklingen-Wehrden exit toward Saarbrücken is scheduled for the night of September 3 to September 4 for safety reasons.

Simultaneously, renovation work on the A8 between Merzig-Wellingen and Perl-Borg is causing frustration for commuters traveling toward Luxembourg. The project utilizes a single-lane bottleneck over a 4.3-kilometer stretch, leading to frequent congestion and limited space for vehicles experiencing breakdowns. Commuters have noted that the narrow lanes and steep inclines make the stretch particularly difficult for heavy goods vehicles.
