Saarland Holds New Regional Assembly Election After AfD Legal Win

A regional court in Saarland annulled the previous election for the Regional Assembly of Saarbrücken after the AfD successfully challenged the validity of its own list submission. The ruling requires a new election to be held at the end of August.

Because the new election was called on short notice, smaller parties face difficulties obtaining the required 135 supporting signatures to qualify for the ballot. Parties such as the Free Voters, Saarland for All, and the eco‑social group “bunt. saar” reported that the compressed deadline effectively excludes them, calling the process discriminatory. The AfD’s legal victory and the ensuing re‑election reshuffle the composition of the regional body and highlight procedural hurdles for minor parties.
