Saarland Hurricanes to withdraw from German Football League
The Saarland Hurricanes have announced plans to voluntarily withdraw their men's team from the German Football League (GFL 1) starting in the 2027 season. The decision follows internal deliberations regarding the club's sporting, economic, and organizational requirements.
The club's board noted that while the increasing professionalization of the GFL is a positive development for American football in Germany, an internal analysis revealed that the Hurricanes must further develop their own structures to remain competitive long-term.
Rather than a permanent departure from elite football, the club intends to use the Regionalliga (the third tier) as a period for strategic rebuilding. Key objectives include strengthening youth development, improving sustainable squad planning, enhancing organizational frameworks, and refining volunteer structures. The ultimate goal remains a return to the GFL once the club has achieved necessary sporting and financial stability.
