Saarland plans mandatory cat sterilization and microchipping
The state government of Saarland is planning a fundamental revision of the cat protection ordinance, which would expand existing regulations to the entire state. Currently, these rules are limited to three areas in Blieskastel, including Mimbach and Webenheim.
Under the proposed regulations, private owners who allow their cats to roam freely would be required to have them sterilized, microchipped, and registered in a recognized pet registry. The primary objective is to prevent the uncontrolled reproduction of free-roaming cats and the subsequent creation of new populations of stray animals.
Pet owners would be responsible for all associated costs. Based on the nationwide fee schedule for veterinarians (GOT), sterilization costs for males can exceed 100 euros, while procedures for females may cost several hundred euros due to increased complexity. Additional costs include microchipping and documentation fees, though registration in services like TASSO remains free.
