Saarland police study reveals widespread mental health challenges

A study conducted by the Saarland Ministry of the Interior has revealed significant mental health challenges among police officers in the region. According to the survey of over 900 officers, approximately 61 percent reported experiencing at least one highly stressful event within the past twelve months.

The findings highlight a reluctance to seek help, with 42 percent of respondents stating they do not feel comfortable speaking openly about psychological burdens. More than half of those surveyed expressed fear of professional disadvantages if they seek support, while 27 percent reported feeling shame regarding psychological assistance.

The study was prompted by the death of Police Commissioner Simon Bohr, who was shot and killed during a gas station robbery in Völklingen in August 2025. Following the incident, the police union GdP demanded an investigation into how traumatic events are handled. Interior Minister Reinhold Jost acknowledged that previous approaches were insufficient, noting that officers were often too traumatized to seek standard assistance or file for service accident claims.
