Saarland recycling plant fire forces 150 firefighters, robot deployment
A large fire broke out in a recycling plant in Neunkirchen‑Wellesweiler, Saarland, on the afternoon of 30 July 2026. Approximately 150 firefighters were deployed to combat flames that covered about 1 300 sqm. Exploding spray cans created secondary blasts, prompting the use of a specialized firefighting robot for safety. Three people were injured – two plant workers and one firefighter – and were taken to hospitals. Thick black smoke rose up to 100 m, visible from Saarbrücken and St. Wendel, leading to the evacuation of several nearby houses. Saarland interior minister Reinhold Jost visited the scene. The fire was fully contained by around 23:00, but the cause remains under investigation and a fire watch continues.
