Saarland University appoints Francesca Gilli to neuroinflammation research
Francesca Gilli has been appointed as a new professor for neuroinflammation at Saarland University. Her research focuses on Multiple Sclerosis (MS), specifically investigating the mechanisms behind progressive forms of the disease that lead to nerve and tissue damage.
Gilli’s work examines the interaction between immune cells, glial cells, and neuronal structures, as well as the molecular signaling pathways connecting neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. Her research team is also investigating whether inhibiting specific signaling pathways can reduce chronic neuroinflammation and preserve neurological functions.
Additionally, Gilli is working to develop and validate biomarkers in blood and cerebrospinal fluid to better track disease activity and progression. Her research integrates clinical samples with modern molecular biology and multi-omic methods to improve early diagnosis, prognosis, and the development of targeted therapies.
