Saarländischer Rundfunk director calls for higher broadcasting fees

Martin Grasmück, the director of Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR), has called for an increase in the broadcasting fee, stating that revenues are not rising as previously estimated. He noted that certain assumptions made by the Commission for Determining the Financial Needs of Broadcasting Stations (KEF) in its recent report have not materialized.

Grasmück emphasized the importance of securing at least a reduced fee increase to cover costs, even as the broadcaster faces significant pressure to save money. The KEF had previously proposed a 58-cent increase to 18.94 euros for January 2025, but German federal states did not implement it. This led ARD and ZDF to file a lawsuit with the Federal Constitutional Court, which is currently pending.

Recently, the KEF recommended a smaller increase to 18.64 euros, scheduled for January 1, 2027. Grasmück expressed concern that the current system of agreement among the 16 federal states has reached its limits.
