Saba modernizes senior care with new facility and first elevator

Saba is undergoing a significant modernization of its senior care infrastructure following the demolition of the 46-year-old Honorable Henry Carlyle Every Home for the Aged facility. The previous building, which had served the community since the 1980s, was deemed insufficient to meet the needs of the island’s aging population due to cramped living quarters.

During the construction of the new, modern facility, residents have been transitioned into temporary, fully furnished Assisted Living Apartments. These units feature personalized touches, such as uniquely colored doors to assist with navigation, and a shared balcony overlooking the capital, The Bottom. Notably, the facility now includes Saba’s first-ever elevator, providing essential accessibility for residents with limited mobility.

Sophie Coffie, a care coordinator at Saba Cares, emphasized that resident well-being, safety, and independence remain the priority during this transition. The project is part of a broader local initiative to combine improved physical facilities with community education and preventative care.
