Sabadell City Council rejects police reform but approves Catalan language department
The Sabadell municipal council has addressed two distinct political motions regarding local governance and social services.
A proposal by La Crida per Sabadell to transform the Municipal Police into a proximity-based model was rejected. The motion sought to introduce 'neighborhood agents' to act as stable community referents, focusing on prevention, mediation, and social coordination rather than purely punitive responses. It also called for specialized training in areas such as racism, gender violence, and mental health. The motion was defeated by votes from the PSC, PP, and Vox, with the PSC government stating they could not support a proposal perceived as expressing distrust in the police.
In contrast, the council approved a motion to create a department dedicated to the defense and promotion of the Catalan language. Supported by sovereignty-focused parties and independent councilors, the motion passed following an abstention by the PSC. The initiative includes the creation of a local language council and the city's adherence to a supra-municipal network to promote the language. Supporters emphasized the need for human and economic resources to ensure Catalan remains a useful and present language in daily local life.
