Sabadell former Civil Guard barracks to host hospital services
The long-standing dispute over the former Civil Guard barracks in Sabadell has reached a resolution. Following an agreement between the Spanish State, the Generalitat, and the Sabadell City Council, the Ministry of the Interior has agreed to the de-affectation of the 9,200-square-meter plot, returning ownership to the municipality.
The site, which has been largely abandoned for nearly thirty years, is slated to host outpatient services for the Hospital Universitari Parc Taulí. This expansion aims to strengthen the healthcare capacity for the more than 400,000 people served by the hospital in the Vallès Occidental region. The project intends to implement an ambulatory care model to streamline diagnostic tests and treatments, reducing patient travel and wait times.
The legal history of the site dates back to its construction between 1911 and 1913 on former municipal cemetery land. While a 1944 condition stated the land should return to the city if the Civil Guard vacated, a 2025 Supreme Court ruling had previously invalidated a 2018 municipal ownership declaration, asserting the property belonged to the State. The current agreement, announced by President Salvador Illa, resolves this historical claim without cost to the city.
