Sabah government reviews special healthcare sector initiatives
The Sabah state government is considering a special initiative to address ongoing challenges within the region's healthcare sector. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor stated that the government is examining proposals to tackle various healthcare issues, emphasizing the importance of healthy lifestyles through activities like National Sports Day.
In a separate call for action, Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Datuk Chan Foong Hin urged that the 2027 Budget prioritize Sabah's healthcare improvements. He highlighted the need for targeted allocations to address workforce shortages, specifically the lack of medical officers committing to permanent placements in Sabah and Sarawak.
Chan proposed a special package to attract and retain healthcare professionals, including nurses, pharmacists, and support staff, through better incentives, housing, and career development opportunities. Additionally, he called for upgrades to medical facilities, such as Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, and improved healthcare access for rural and remote populations through strengthened district hospitals and mobile services.
