Sabah invests RM10 million in livestock integration program
The Sabah government is investing over RM10 million to strengthen the state's livestock sector through an integration program with oil palm plantations. The initiative aims to boost productivity and increase farmer income by introducing high-quality breeds.
As part of this effort, the state has imported 780 Brahman Cross beef cattle from Darwin, Australia, consisting of 750 females and 30 males. This specific breed was selected for its ability to thrive in Sabah’s hot and humid climate. Additionally, the procurement includes 395 dairy cattle and 800 Boer goats sourced from Melbourne and Brisbane.
To ensure the sustainability of the program, the state will implement a bond mechanism. Participating farmers will be required to maintain ownership of the livestock for three years; failure to do so, or loss of livestock due to negligence, could result in the forfeiture of the bond and affect future eligibility for government assistance. Selected farmers have already undergone training organized by the Department of Veterinary Services.
