At the WTA 1000 event in Toronto, Belarusian world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka defeated Japan's Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets 6‑3, 6‑3 to move into the third round, where she will face Shuai Zhang.

American Madison Keys, ranked 23rd, opened her campaign with a 6‑1, 6‑2 win over Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic, setting up a second‑round match against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. Other notable results included Poland’s Iga Świątek beating Sara Bejlek 6‑0, 6‑3 and Marta Kostiuk eliminating Katherine Sebov.
