Sabang and Balikpapan pursue new logistics and port investment projects

In Sabang, the Sabang Free Port Authority (BPKS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ASPRINDO to develop the Sabang Free Trade Zone and Free Port. The agreement covers master plan formulation, investment promotion, logistics development, waste management, and energy efficiency. However, economic observers have cautioned that the MoU must lead to tangible results, such as increased cargo flow and job creation, rather than remaining a mere ceremonial gesture. Experts emphasized that Sabang must provide efficient services and competitive costs to leverage its strategic location near the Malacca Strait.

Meanwhile, the Balikpapan city government is seeking foreign investors for a proposed integrated container depot project in North Balikpapan. Presented at the Mahakam Investment Forum, the project is estimated to generate annual revenues of up to Rp100 billion. The initiative involves collaboration between local and provincial investment agencies and Bank Indonesia. While the project aims to strengthen regional distribution systems, officials noted that land clearing must be completed before full implementation. Discussions have already been initiated with potential investors from Hong Kong.
