Sabar Institute report: Massive voter deletions in Maharashtra
A preliminary report by the Sabar Institute reveals that over 2.06 crore voters, representing 21.1 per cent of Maharashtra’s pre-revision electorate, were removed during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
The analysis indicates that 83 per cent of the deleted voters were classified as alive. Specifically, only 16.8 per cent of the 20,688,421 names on the Absent, Shifted, Dead and Duplicate (ASD) list were recorded as deaths. The largest categories for removal were voters marked as untraceable or absent (37.5 per cent) and those classified as permanently shifted (37.1 per cent).
The report highlights a disproportionate impact on Muslim-named voters, who accounted for 14.6 per cent of total deletions (3,020,173 names), exceeding their estimated 12.1 per cent share of the state population based on 2011 Census data. This disparity was more pronounced in Mumbai, where Muslim-named voters comprised 21.3 per cent of deletions compared to 13.2 per cent in the rest of the state.
Among the most common surnames removed were Shaikh (753,978), Patil (483,526), Khan (368,649), Jadhav (339,796), and Pawar (274,607). The institute noted that 46 per cent of the living voters removed were under the age of 40, and 3,250 third-gender voters were also among those deleted.
