Saber Interactive CEO apologizes to writer following AI dispute
Saber Interactive CEO Matt Karch has issued an apology to Stella Sacco, the former lead writer for the upcoming driving simulator ‘Rideshare Stimulator’, following a public dispute regarding the use of artificial intelligence.
Sacco alleged she was replaced by ChatGPT during the game's development in late 2023. While Saber Interactive has consistently denied replacing human writers with AI—maintaining that the core story was written by humans—the company has since updated its Steam store page to include AI disclosures. The updated information clarifies that AI tools are used for voice generation, localization, and an experimental ‘Free-Ride’ mode that features AI-generated passenger missions and dialogue.
Karch initially dismissed Sacco’s claims on social media but later apologized for his manner of communication. He stated that the integration of AI was intended to explore new player experiences rather than reduce costs, noting that the net costs for implementing these features were actually higher than omitting them. He also emphasized that the company is focused on building AI competency rather than using the technology for staff reductions.
