Saber Interactive leverages global talent to reduce game development costs
Saber Interactive Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits has detailed the studio's strategy of managing development costs to achieve commercial success. He noted that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 cost approximately one-third as much to develop as major AAA titles from North American studios, yet it sold 11 million more copies.
Willits explained that Saber Interactive has moved away from North American development, maintaining US headquarters and publishing operations while distributing development teams globally across countries such as Serbia, Armenia, Georgia, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Argentina, and Australia. He argued that high salary costs in North America make large-scale development difficult to sustain and stated that top talent can be found anywhere, not just in California.
Looking forward, Willits revealed that Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 will utilize technology evolved from the title John Carpenter's Toxic Commando. This technological progression is intended to enable larger areas, more numerous entities, and improved artificial intelligence in future Saber Interactive projects.
