Sabesp commits to universal water and sewage service in São Paulo by 2029

Sabesp announced that it will achieve universal sanitation coverage across the 371 municipalities in its service area by 2029, moving the target up from the original 2033 deadline. The plan aims for 99% of water to be treated and 90% of sewage to be collected and treated.

São Paulo state environment secretary Natália Resende highlighted the challenges, citing gaps in Salesópolis, the Vale do Ribeira and Guarulhos, where sewage treatment rates remain low. She noted that the Tietê River now receives about 22% less organic load, equivalent to roughly 10 billion litres of sewage per month being treated. Sabesp president Carlos Augusto Leone Piani said the utility completed two years of privatization in July and reaffirmed the accelerated timeline.

The initiative involves expanding infrastructure, increasing technical staff and leveraging new technologies to meet the ambitious coverage goals within the next three years.
