Sabinas River Protest Demands Review of Water Transfer and Mining Pollution in Coahuila
Citizens, environmentalists and former officials gathered in Coahuila to protest the deteriorating condition of the Sabinas River. About 30 demonstrators, including former Juárez mayor Sergio Kobel, members of the Consejo de Ecología y Participación Ciudadana such as Mirthala Gómez, and professor Alejandro Múzquiz, called on federal authorities to investigate alleged contamination from mining waste and heavy metals and to halt the over‑exploitation of groundwater.
The participants also demanded a review of the long‑standing water‑transfer agreement that diverts water from the Don Martín dam to the neighboring state of Nuevo León, arguing that the current allocation threatens local water supplies, fisheries, tourism and community livelihoods. They urged the government to invest in sanitation infrastructure, enforce permanent environmental monitoring and develop a long‑term restoration plan for the river ecosystem.
