Sacha Baron-Cohen credits Perth for inspiration of Ali G sequel
Actor Sacha Baron-Cohen has revealed that his new film, ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’, was inspired by a series of events in Perth, Western Australia, during the pandemic.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Baron-Cohen explained that while attempting to move to Australia to be near his ex-wife, Isla Fisher, he was required to demonstrate a financial benefit to the region to gain entry. To facilitate this, he claimed to the Western Australia Police that he was planning a stand-up tour that would create 300 jobs and generate tens of millions of dollars for the state.
After being granted entry, Baron-Cohen found himself obligated to fulfill the claim. He eventually organized secret stand-up performances in Perth in September 2021, performing as several of his satirical characters, including Borat and Bruno, to local audiences.
