Sacha Baron Cohen funds $3 million film sequence personally
Actor and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he personally funded $3 million to complete a highly ambitious sequence for his new comedy, ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’.
The sequence consists of an eight-hour continuous shot spanning multiple locations and approximately 40 different scenes. The complex production involves roughly 400 individual details that must be executed perfectly with real people, including elements such as shootings, a medical procedure, a fire, and a staged kidnapping.
Cohen explained that the total cost for filming the sequence reaches $4 million per attempt. Because his insurance only covers $1 million, he had to pay the remaining $3 million out of pocket after production delays caused by an unexpected fire at one of the filming locations.
